Who do you think knows you the best?

Maybe you are thinking of your mom, your spouse, your best friend, or you may even be thinking of your dog. Whoever you are thinking of is who you claim knows you inside and out. You would say, they are your person.

My person, the one who knows me best, is my husband. He has seen the worst of me, the best of me, and almost everything in between. But I will have to admit that he does not know all of me.

That is not because I am trying to hide things from him or keep deep, dark secrets; it is simply reality. He cannot know my every thought, my every emotion, or even every part of my past (I can't remember it either), and the truth is, I probably wouldn't want him to know what I am thinking all the time.

I am guessing you would say the same about whoever you thought of. Do they really know everything about you? Would you want them to know your every thought and emotion? The real question is - would they still be your person if they knew those things?

God Knows It All

What an incredibly comforting and utterly terrifying thought. God knows everything about you. He knows you better than you know yourself because He created you. He knew all about you before you were even formed.

Take a look at Psalm 139:

"You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar" (v. 2)

"Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether" (v. 4)

"For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb" (v. 13)

"Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there were none of them" (v. 16)

God knew you before you took your first breath (vs. 13). He knows what you are going to say before you even say it (vs. 4). He knows your thoughts and your actions (vs. 1). You cannot hide from God (vs. 7-11). God knows you inside and out.

Wow. Take a moment to dwell on that truth. How does that truth make you feel?

Comfort or Fear

When you are walking close to Christ, through a trial, or in the in between, the fact that you are known and seen by God should bring comfort. But when you are walking in the flesh and seeking personal gain, this truth can invoke fear and trembling. God knows the good, the bad, and everything in between.

Leaving this truth as it is - that we are fully known and fully seen by God - is missing a core component, the component that brings peace and comfort.

You are fully known, fully seen, AND fully loved by God.

Even though God sees the worst part of you, even the parts you have not yet identified in your life, He loves you with an unconditional, sacrificial love. You can be assured of this because He died for you while you were still a sinner (Rom. 5:8). He does not require you to have your life together before receiving His love, forgiveness or even His grace.

God loved you enough to die for you even though He knows every facet of your life.

Even with the knowledge that I am fully known and still fully loved by God, I still find myself blinded by my pride and running after the things of this world, thinking I can slip one past God or just ask for forgiveness later. But realizing that God fully knows us and still unconditionally loves us, should motivate us to live a life that is wholeheartedly devoted to Him.

Because God knows your every thought, take every thought captive for the obedience of Christ (2 Cor. 10:5). Because Jesus came to earth, suffered, and died for you, do everything for the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31). God redeemed you from a life of sin and death; let your words and the things you dwell on be acceptable to God (Psalm. 19:14).

You will never be too far gone to be loved by God. Don't believe the lie that you have failed too many times for God to use you or take you back. He has known the fullness of humanity from the beginning of time, and He still chose to die for and live through the human race. You are never alone. We all have our own unique story, but we are all fully known and fully loved by our merciful God.
